Soma is a church that will be starting in September 2009 – you can find out all about it at our main website.
Soma Music is the church’s music team. This blog is their dumping ground for thoughts, stories and experiences behind the process of getting a church band up and running – while trying to rethink a few things along the way!
The team
Pete Hughes
Pete’s the honcho. He’s the chief architect of the vision for Soma and the guy that dragged our crazy, enthusastic team together. Actually God did all that – but he used Pete to do it and for that we’re pretty psyched. Previously Pete worked with AFES at various uni campuses for around 10 years. Pete’s married to Audrey and has two kids. He tells frequent stories about the bands he used to play in in his younger days, but we’re waiting for the reunion gig/tour so we can experience his musical prowess firsthand.
Joe Hardy
Some of Joe’s earliest and most significant encounters with music came from the church music bands he experienced as a wide eyed youngster: it had a lot to do with what got him first started in music at all. Since then, he’s bounced around in a journey discovering and enjoying all varieties of music, and trying to wrap his head around how it all fits within God’s creation. Joe’s married to Carly and has a daughter. When he’s not doing Soma Music he works either his day job or occasionally as a producer/remixer. You can check out his general music blog if you’re interested in what he listens to.
Matt Frazer
Matt was very young indeed when he first began to realise the joy that music could bring. Looking back over almost two and a half decades of life, it’s impossible for him to remember what life was like without melody, rhythm and texture. Matt is what most people would describe as “classically trained” in pianoforte, but is also an unashamed nerd and loves trying out new sounds and ways of making music. Having now got that pesky tertiary education out of the way, Matt is keen to begin experimenting with writing and producing music for other people to listen to and, hopefully, enjoy. Matt is married to Libby and has an alternate life as a cubicle rat.
Matt’s Dad here(or as his mother and I prefer to call him-Matthew). Yes he has been playing a while! While Matthew may not remember it WE very clearly remember him as a 4 year old who would not join in at pre-school music classes until the end of the year. After that, well, he took off and you can now see and hear the result of all those music lessons, practice (with just a little parental encouragement from time to time), concerts, workshops, AMEB exams and the like. Matthew has been blessed with a wonderful musical gift which he is continuing to develop and share the joy of music ministry in this new Church.
